TANGO WITH THE LINGO:
WHERE THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT MAKING THE LEAP!

Daniel Gulati, co-author of Passion & Purpose: Stories from the Best and Brightest Young Business Leaders, talks about making smart LEAP!s when you are thinking of quitting your job. He writes here: “The first step in making the leap is to recount your career goals and visualize a life-changing leap forward, not an incremental hop.” Why be cautious? Because, he says, if you shoot from the hip, you may aim too low. The brain, he reminds us, tends to overvalue near-term growth and is irrationally receptive to relative improvements in position. In your career, he says, on average you’ll get 10 opportunities to quit. Each time you do, Gulati counsels, you need to be sure that your next assignment brings you closer to your true passion in life. One of his key LEAP! rules: Don’t aim short!
