Some people thought the strategy of the dolphin was about dolphins.

It wasn’t.

It was about humans. And what a person with a closely attentive mind can achieve with a powerful new “what works” psychology and an ever-evolving personal M.O., energized with the appropriate mojo.

Now, there's a new dolphin book called LEAP! Some people will think it's about dolphins. It isn't.

It's about being effective and influential in a world of great flux, surprise, uncertainty and sometimes danger. And about believing in the “power of next” and eliciting and activating the very skills and actions that can harness this yeasty catalyst and mobilize its benefits.

In LEAP!, Brain Technologies president Dudley Lynch, creator of the bestselling Strategy of the Dolphin, again demonstrates how skilled he is at describing the new simplicities beyond tired, burdened, ineffective old complexities.

LEAP! reveals that the dolphin mind and its “come hell or high water” pragmatism is one of the strangest, most counterintuitive and yet most natural and useful things to be found in each of our heads. Yet it can take root and prosper ONLY if you become more skilled than you’ve ever been at FINDING AND MOBILIZING THE NEXT RIGHT, SMART, GOOD THING or MOVE.

That is to say, at discovering and implementing what is doable, sensible and ready to become real, if not this very instant, in the incoming super-tsunami of change hurdling at us in this turbulent new century.

One zero cool book changed lives. Now, its sequel is ready to change yours.

Prize what's right. Dump what's dumb. Find what works. Then, make it happen by reordering your reality at a new level of simplicity, effectiveness and satisfaction.

In a nutshell, those are precisely the kind of spot-on observations and outcomes made possible by the thinking qualities illuminated in this trailblazing new book.

Veteran change and strategy expert Dudley Lynch says these skills can become available to any of us when we activate the unique thinking characteristics of what he calls “the dolphin mind.” In contrast to the increasingly antiquated and overwhelmed carp, shark and not-quite-flying-fish varieties of mind, the dolphin mind isn't swamped by the rapid-change demands of the Twenty-First Century. Instead, it is constantly searching for ways to make the leap to the next right, smart, good thing or move.

In this galvanizing work with universal appeal, Mr. Lynch, president of Brain Technologies, demonstrates one more time why he is considered by many to be the most insightful, eloquent and inspiring guide to the work of the late Clare W. Graves, psychology's most original “interdisciplinary” explorer of how the mind grows. And why he is uniquely equipped to offer dependable counsel on how to respond to the unprecedented demands of our change-fraught new century.

In LEAP!, he seeks and promotes these “next level” powers and abilities for every reader:

  • The super-glues of self-healing, raised to a whole new effectiveness.
  • The confidence to confront. And then, where possible, to include.
  • An automatic aversion to incompetence. (And a game plan for dealing with it.)
  • Wonderment, then exploration, then activation. Because it's your nature.
  • The judgment of the merciful & the passion of the justice seeker. (And the wisdom to know the difference.)
  • Awareness, so you can always find your way forward.
  • Resilience, so you can always find your way back.

And, of course, the ability to make the leap to what's next, what's possible, what makes sense and what works any time and every time the world confronts you with the need to do something different.

In 9 highly instructional chapters and 8 inspirational profiles, LEAP! gets you ready for the launch, come hell or high water, feeding frenzies, the jarring arrival of the unknown, tough times or other life-changing events. Equipped with the insider's trade secrets of the leap, you can count on the tangible payoffs you are looking for, whether you need to search for a new job or career, discover new meaning for your life or just get to work updating and reinvigorating your favorite part of the planet by becoming the solution even when there doesn't appear to be one anywhere in sight.

LEAP!'s Mantra of
‘Actionable Pragmatism’

The author of LEAP! wants each of his readers to become an expert at spotting and using these fundamental focuses and forces—the powers!—when they need to do something different:

The Power of Next means sensing what needs to happen now—what priorities can’t wait, what important signals are being given off by what’s hidden, what's clicking and fomenting in the moment.

The Power of Right means quickly inventorying the “must haves” and the “must nots.” Staying alert and staying sensitive to what's possible, what makes sense, what’s real!

The Power of Smart means getting past the hang-ups and screw-ups, that is, abandoning what's dumb and embracing what’s smart so you don't end up back where you started.

The Power of Good means steering toward actions that can produce a net gain for all participants and that play into the “virtuous instincts” we all share.

The Power of the “What Works” Move or Thing means no kicking the can down the road by acknowledging that there’s a needful world to be attended to immediately with concrete actions and workable outcomes.

LEAP!’s author returns again and again to this vivid issue of actionable pragmatism: how to find and mobilize the next right, smart, good thing or move! When you reach the end of LEAP!, don't be surprised when you realize that you have been participating in the debut of a powerful new “what works” psychology based on “actionable pragmatism”!

The Author of LEAP!
Describes How He
Pictures His ‘Ideal Readers’

I think my ideal readers will arrive at this book concerned, discontented but not openly rebellious. I haven’t written this for tea party types nor for one-world fundamentalists but rather for “sensible adapters” looking for wider personal understanding and competence in a challenging new world.

My readers will want sureties from the past to be honored and put to good use but not at the expense of efficiency, effectiveness and responsiveness to new trends, patterns and discoveries. Above all, they want to avoid being lumped with the “extremophiles” of any ilk. And they will have no bias against looking, sounding and being smart but, in fact, will prefer the company of the same.

I'm confident that my readers will already know about the importance of the LEAP! and that the more they think about it, the more desirous they will be of being its instigator in others. They will realize that anytime you spy a promising leap in progress, it is an indication that the process of finding the next right, smart, good thing or move is underway somewhere close by, that real energy is being expended and that the activity is proceeding under the direction of someone who knows what they are doing and has the skills for doing it well.

And if asked to lay their expectations squarely on the line, I believe these “ideal readers” will tell me:

“I’m buying your book because I’m tired of reading formulaic biz-school-type and positive-thinking type stuff, whether it’s rah-rah or woo-woo. That’s a seriously tumultuous world out there, and it’s already causing me and people I care about bewilderment, and sometimes pain and loss.

“So, sure, talk to me about pragmatic, nonfrivolous practicalities. But then also brief me and coach me on the bigger picture.

“I need a sense of what I should be becoming, based on what the best thinkers are now seeing and thinking. Help me to hope and plan and prepare—in specifics—for the day after tomorrow as well as survive the next 90 minutes. When I’m finished reading your book, I want to be absolutely smack-dab in the middle of the farthest leading edge of my own personal little world, ready to adapt to what’s new and incoming, sensibly, using every ounce of competency I’m capable of mustering.”

You’ll Benefit from
Knowing How These
Exceptional
Dolphinthinkers
Make the Leap

LEAP!
profiles the life stories and achievements (so far) of nine gifted leapers. Some of them you are unlikely to have heard of. Some make new headlines daily. But they all have one thing in common: As dolphinthinkers, they excel at making the leap.

In LEAP!, be prepared to meet:

  • The Ohio daughter of an alcoholic father and troubled mother who yearned very early to sing professionally and has never quit searching for new ways to introduce the gypsy in her soul to the dolphin in her mind.

  • An Argentine-born tennis coach of multiple talents (including playwriting) who, now as an American citizen, teaches very wealthy and successful people that there's more to be experienced in life than just being wealthy and successful.

  • Probably the most competent, innovative and influential fire chief in the history of the fire service. Certainly, he's deserving of being called “America's Fire Chief.” And he thinks—and leaps—like a dolphin.

  • The valiant Scottish ex-military dentist who has repeatedly “done the dolphin thing” when others said he couldn’t and is now working at his biggest leap ever—championing the cause of his country’s independence.

  • The American medical profession’s very own version of the prophet Jeremiah. He’s one of its most authoritative voices for change because his leaps are so original and effective. Example: The pre-surgery checklist he created for use in the world’s operating suites is saving countless lives every year.

  • The young French economist who has helped develop a whole new kind of economics to make leaps work better for the poorest of the world’s poor. At the same time, she’s shown some of the world’s biggest charity outfits why their leap attempts with very poor people so often fail.

  • The Colorado mother of two who has brought succor and solace to brain-injury families worldwide (including her own) by showing them how to leap when leaping is hard. Her dolphinthinking skills are rooted in her ability to figure things out, which she realized at a very early age she was good at.

  • The precocious Irish actor/director who caught the fervor to think like a dolphin as an ambitious young adult but had to learn the hard way that you can't fake breakthrough thinking. He hit bottom, kept working on his leap skills and now, he's back at the top of his game in charge of all the arts for the Dublin City Council!

  • One of the most fearless dolphinthinkers. By age 17, he had identified what he felt were three important, world-class problems deserving his attention. Before age 40, he had created ambitious, pioneering new companies in each category that had gotten him named one of America's most powerful young CEOs and made him a billionaire.

Why the People Who Fare
Best in Challenging Times
Are Those Most Skilled at
Making the Leap

Dolphins (the human variety) make superb leapers for these reasons:

  • It is so easy for dolphinthinkers to say yes. (It's a result of being so practiced at saying no.)

  • They take great pains to remind themselves that they are incorrigibly biased and make adjustments.

  • They realize that “power” leaping comes from being in the game without being controlled by it.

  • They understand that the best results can come from starting at the end of the leap and working backwards.

  • They recognize that successful leaps take account of the fact that the future is both created and slammed into and are prepared for either happening.

  • They fully appreciate that the successful leap is all about encouraging prudent, authentic, real, vigilant, keen, persistent, wholehearted, malleable, virtuous, alert, accountable and resilient outcomes in the service of finding and mobilizing the next right, smart, good thing or move.

4 Important Insights

The “What Works” World
of the Author of LEAP!

Dudley Lynch has always needed his world to work. Perhaps that’s because he was born substantially deaf. When you are guessing most times at much of what is being said around you, verisimilitude matters. And pragmatism can deliver that.

As a child, he paid a price for his insistence that the adults in his life pay attention to what works and do something different when it didn’t.

His father was not amused when, at age nine, Dudley abruptly informed him that the mother of the family wasn’t working out. It wasn’t that Dudley didn’t love his mother. He did, deeply. But she was a shopaholic and kept the family in grievous debt all her life. Why couldn’t his father see that, Dudley wondered?

In the small towns of Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona and New Mexico where he grew up, thinking pragmatically was often a drawback for a child. Most adults in small-town America in the 1940s and 1950s did not like their authority challenged by children, pragmatically or otherwise.

As a young adult, Dudley’s pragmatic instincts failed to set well with the religious community he’d been raised in. More rough sailing and, eventually, things capsized.

The give-and-take of the university community proved more amendable to Dudley’s constant questioning. Armed with two degrees, he hied himself off to the world of employment. Only to discover in a dismal succession of jobs just how much of “going to work” each day had to be devoted to dealing with the dysfunction around him.

It wasn’t until he discovered the psychological research and writings of the late Clare W. Graves, perhaps psychology’s greatest interdisciplinary thinker, that he realized his natural pragmatism was a compelling characteristic of an exceedingly useful mindset.

In the 1970s, he and his wife/lifework partner, Sherry Ann Lynch, formed a company, Brain Technologies Corporation, to teach the “what works” skills that Dr. Graves discovered are available to minds that keep developing their ability to leverage the brain’s complexity.

In the intervening years, a number of books have been written, six unique self assessments developed, hundreds of thinking skills professionals trained, tens of thousands of miles traveled in consulting and training assignments. But encouraging and teaching the brain to think pragmatically is a never-ending task.

As the gains of the 1990s began to fade and the surprises of the new century shocked our collective sensibilities to the core, Dudley felt compelled more than ever to remind his audience of the critical value of thinking pragmatically. Of thinking like a dolphin and not like a carp, shark or not-quite-flying-fish.

In the late 2000s, he became aware that his mind had become the amanuensis to a core set of ideas that were insisting on making their way “onto paper.” LEAP! is the result. In a way, it is the sequel to a work, Strategy of the Dolphin (written with Dr. Paul L. Kordis), that put readers in eight languages on the trail of thinking pragmatically in every area of their lives. But Strategy was something of a “cover the waterfront” work. In LEAP!, Dudley never takes his eye off the pragmatic.

Repeatedly, he reminds his reader that thinking like a dolphin means developing and using your skills for finding and mobilizing the right, smart, good thing or move. And then, with the help of his many trenchant sources and the nine superb leapers he profiles, he shows how it is best done when you awaken every morning to a world that is riving with change, the unexpected and the unknown.
